How it is worked out

L × W × D ÷ 27 = bank yd³ × (1 + swell) = loose yd³ ÷ truck capacity = loads

What it assumes

Dirt swells when you dig it: the same ground takes more room in the truck than it did in the hole. Ignoring swell is how a job runs three loads over.
Swell is soil-dependent — 25% for common earth, more for clay, much more for shot rock.
Tandem dumps typically haul 12–16 yd³; tri-axles more. Use your truck's real number.
