How it is worked out

sections = length ÷ spacing rounded up · posts = sections + 1 + gates

What it assumes

8 ft post spacing suits most privacy fence; 6 ft where wind is serious.
Three rails per section carries a 6 ft privacy panel without sag.
A gate hangs on one extra post beyond the line posts.
