How it is worked out

finished yd³ × (1 + compaction) = loose yd³ × tons per yd³ = tons

What it assumes

The depth you enter is the FINISHED, compacted depth. You buy loose material and pack it down, so the order is always bigger than the hole.
15% is a working number for crusher run under a plate compactor. Deeper lifts and clay subgrade run higher.
Tons per cubic yard is a quarry number and varies by pit. The default is editable — check your ticket.
