What the hour has to bring in to cover the truck, the insurance and your own pay — before any profit.

How it is worked out

(overhead + owner's pay) ÷ billable hours a year = break-even × (1 + profit%) = rate

What it assumes

BILLABLE hours, not hours worked. Quoting, driving, invoicing and chasing parts are all real hours that no customer pays for directly, so they cannot carry the overhead — the billable ones have to carry it for them. Most one- and two-person crews bill 22 to 30 hours in a 40-hour week.
Your own pay belongs in the costs. It is what the business owes you for the work, and leaving it out is what makes a rate look survivable when it is not.
Overhead is everything that shows up whether or not you work: truck payment and fuel, insurance, phone, software, licenses, the accountant, the yard.
Profit is on top of paying yourself, not instead of it. It is what buys the next truck and carries a slow February.
