What was left after materials, labor and everything else — on a job you have already finished.

How it is worked out

price − (materials + hours × loaded rate + other costs) = profit ÷ price = margin

What it assumes

LOADED rate, not what lands in a paycheck. Payroll taxes, workers' comp and insurance make an employee cost noticeably more per hour than their wage, and using the wage makes every job look better than it was.
Count the hours actually on the job, including the return trip for the part.
Other costs is dump fees, permits, equipment rental, subs — the line that quietly decides jobs.
Margin is on the price, not on the cost. A 20% markup is about a 17% margin, and mixing them up is how a busy year ends flat.
