How it is worked out

square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324 = cubic yards

What it assumes

324 is not magic: it's 12 × 27, which converts inches of depth and 27 ft³ per yard in one step.
2–3 in is a normal mulch bed. Topsoil for grading goes deeper.
