How it is worked out

wall length ÷ spacing + 1, plus 2 per corner and 4 per opening

What it assumes

16 in on-center is standard; 24 works for non-bearing walls with the right top plate.
Two top plates and one bottom plate, which is ordinary load-bearing practice.
An opening costs a king and a jack stud each side; headers are figured separately.
